Converting an RSA Private Key to Putty Private Key (.ppk)

We recommend using WinSCP as an SFTP client to retrieve your Starter Export files. To use WinSCP as an SFTP client, you'll need to convert your RSA Private Key into a format that is compatible with WinSCP.

You can use PuTTYgen, which is included in the WinSCP package, to convert your key into the .ppk format required by WinSCP.

  1. Start PuTTYgen, and in the Conversions menu, click Import key.
  2. In the Load private key window, browse to your RSA Private Key, select it, and then click Open.
  3. Enter a passphrase to associate with the private key. Note that the key fingerprint confirms the number of bits is 4096.
  4. In the File menu, click Save private key to save the key in .ppk format.
  5. Use this .ppk file as your key when you use WinSCP to connect to the provided SFTP.
